Matemático y filósofo británico. Enseñó principalmente en la Universidad de Cambridge (1885–1911) y la Universidad de Harvard (1924–37). En el libro Tratado de álgebra universal (1898) amplió la lógica simbólica de Boole. Colaboró con Bertrand Russell en la decisiva obra Principia Mathematica (1910–13), que intentaba establecer la tesis del logicismo. En Proceso y realidad (1929), su obra más importante en metafísica, sostuvo que el universo estaba constituido enteramente por "devenires, cada uno de los cuales era un proceso de apropiación y de integración de la infinidad de elementos suministrados por el universo precedente y por Dios. Entre sus otras obras se cuentan Sobre los conceptos matemáticos del mundo material (1905), Introducción a las matemáticas (1911), Investigación sobre los principios del conocimiento natural (1919), El concepto de naturaleza (1920), (1925) La ciencia y el mundo moderno y Religion in the Making (1926) [La religión en formación]. Recibió la Orden del Mérito en 1945.
